Obesity Studies Show an Alarming Increase in Overweight Americans

When a person has a chronic condition in which he or she has excess fat in their bodies that is more than just being overweight, it is termed as being obese. Recent obesity studies in America tell us that, alarmingly as many as 65 per cent of Americans re overweight and as many as 31 per cent people are obese. These numbers show a constant rate of increase as the years goes by.

Obesity Rates In Canada: A Quarter of All Canadians Are Obese

If obesity rates in America have reached epidemic proportions, those in the neighboring north are not much better with as many as a fourth of all Canadians being considered obese.

What is more alarming is the fact that obesity rates in Canada have risen dramatically over the past quarter of a century according to Statistics Canada. According to studies conducted on about 35,000 Canadians with respect to their height and weight, the results showed about 23 per cent of all adults were obese which translates to about five and a half million Canadians.

Obesity Rates In The US Have Reached Epidemic Proportions

Perhaps, the most worrying trend as far as obesity rates go is the fact that with so many more people and also children becoming obese, the problem has reached epidemic proportions not only in the US (which is most affected), but also throughout the world. During a short span of the preceding fifteen years, the US saw more and more obese children and adults and their numbers have continued to rise, with experts now estimating that there would be as many as one fifth of all American children becoming obese in the near term.

For those that suffer from obesity, finding out if there is in fact a medical condition that is associated with it, can help them cope with being obese, but often this is not the answer.

Treatment of Obesity in the Elderly Patient

Obesity is a universal health complication that affects individuals of age ranging from childhood to elderly. According to the study report published by National Institutes of Health (NIH), half of the American populations are either overweight or obese. In the elderly section specifically it is estimated that over 37 per cent are overweight and 15 per cent are obese.

The secondary co-morbidities linked up with obesity in the elderly are heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type II diabetes, stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and breast, prostate and colon cancer. These health concerns are considered as a profuse financial obligation for the United States.

The alarming fact today is that obesity in teens is growing at a rapid pace and according to the latest studies conducted on this very topic, it seems that the rate of obesity in teens is the highest as compared to earlier generations and so it is bound to gives rise to the need to treat this problem with grave seriousness since obesity in teens can lead to a number of serious diseases at an early age which is not at all desirable.
