You keep track of the food you eat. You skip the sweet treats, use portion control, and exercise more. But you find it difficult or impossible to lose the excess weight.

Well, you’re not alone. This is a very common problem. Many dieters try, over and over again, to lose weight, but eventually become so discouraged that they simply give up. Don’t let this happen to you. By understanding some of the common causes of diet failures, you can successfully lose weight, and keep it off.

1) While you might expect help from family or friends, they are not always supportive. There are some people who never seem to gain weight, no matter what they eat. They tempt you at work or at home with calorie-dense snacks. They don’t understand how hard it is for you. Ask them to help by not eating the junk or snack food when you are around.

Even the environment seems to work against you, with junk food advertisements everywhere, fast food restaurants on every corner, huge restaurant portions, and unhealthy snack machines. You should restructure your surroundings to help, rather than hinder, your efforts. Stay away from places where you are tempted. Read nutrition facts on packages to learn the correct food portion sizes. Always carry a healthy snack (an apple or raisins, a few nuts, etc. And try using one of the new portion plates for your meals.

2) Most diets have rigid rules and requirements, and are hard to adapt to your lifestyle, habits and body’s specific needs. They provide a “one-size-fits-all” approach for everyone. You can improve your chance of success by working out a personalized program. A doctor or dietician can help. You can find one locally, or through the Internet. In addition to setting up an individualized diet plan, a dietician can become a coach or personal trainer, and help you stay on track.

3) You may not be aware of how many calories some common foods contain. Even foods you think are healthy; for example, fruit juices and many “low-fat” products still have a lot of calories. Most people don’t realize that a frappuccino coffee might have up to 600 calories! Look for the hidden sources of calories that make it hard to succeed in your diet.

4) Lack of persistence can also result in diet failure. If you become discouraged too quickly, or cheat too often, then you will not make much real progress. Don’t look for quick weight loss. It is much healthier to lose weight gradually. And it takes time. It’s important not to give up prematurely.

5) Studies show that 95% of people who diet will gain all of the weight back within a few years. Don’t let that happen to you. Being successful at losing weight and keeping it off requires that you change your lifestyle and attitude. It will be necessary to break your old habits, and develop new eating behaviors. Find a diet program that works for you. A portion control plate can not only help you loose weight, but can be used to help keep the weight off.

Everyone is different, so try to find the diet that’s best for you. According to nutritionists and dieticians, there are several important factors involved in losing and maintaining your weight. You CAN be successful, if you pick healthy foods, use portion control to limit consumption, exercise regularly and never give up.
