Every day in the United States, millions of Americans say to themselves “I need to lose weight.” Does this sound like you? While many of people who tell themselves that they need to lose weight do really need to lose weight, not all do. So, the question that many ask themselves is “do I really need to lose weight?” If that is a question that you have asked yourself before, you will want to keep reading, as we’ll discuss some ways to know if you really need to lose weight.

There are four main ways to know you need to lose weight.

The first sign that you may need to lose weight is if you are obese. Many individuals do not realize that there is a difference between being overweight and being obese.

While different healthcare professionals have different definitions for obese, it is often said that those who are thirty or forty pounds overweight are obese. If you are obese, worry not just about your appearance, but also about your health. Obesity has been linked to multiple health complications, including the early onset of death.

Another way to measure obesity is by your body mass index (BMI) which is a computation that determines your personal ratio of fatness, and is a good indicator of health for most people. A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese.

Another one of the many signs that you should lose weight is if you have been told that you need to do so. Whether your physician urged losing weight or if someone that you know on a personal level has, it is advisable that you at least take their suggestions into consideration. Understandably, people are likely to get upset or embarrassed when told they are fat. What you need to remind yourself is that your doctor or loved one mentioning your weight isn’t as concerned with your appearance as they are with your health. They just want you to be as healthy as you can be.

A third sign that you may want to think about losing weight is if you are finding that your clothes no longer fit you. Of course, it is normal for some individuals to gain weight or to have their weight fluctuate, but you may want to think about joining a weight loss program or developing your own weight loss plan if you find that your clothes no longer fit or are difficult to get into.

Unfortunately, while many people start with a small weight gain (just a few pounds in a year), this small weight gain often leads to more. As the pounds creep on, your overall level of health goes down. As your weight goes up, you will find it difficult to get dressed each day, and will spend most of your days feeling uncomfortable in your body and unhappy with the way your clothes fit. Of course, the alternative to this is to buy new clothes, but this is not something most of us can afford to do each time our weight changes.

A fourth sign you may need to lose weight is when you find that simple tasks or daily behaviors- like walking up a flight of stairs, or sitting on the floor have become more difficult. While getting out of breath from from simple activities may not necessarily be just about a weight problem, being overweight does make these simple activites much more difficult. When you lose even just a little bit of weight- we’re talking 5 or 10 lbs- even this little bit of weight loss will improve your health and ability to do the normal activities of life. You’ll be able to walk easier, breathe easier, and to play with your children or grandchildren. You’ll also have more energy, will feel more confident, your clothes will fit better, and you’ll feel more in control of your body and yourself.

The four signs above are just a few of the many signs that you may need to lose weight. Should you wish to lose weight, you are advised to proceed with caution. There are a number of weight loss products on the market, like diet pills or exercise equipment, which do not work. Save money and protect your health by consulting with your doctor before starting any weight loss program. When you decide to lose weight, select a physician supervised weight loss program, for best, fastest, and safest results.
